REVIEWS: LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
Probably the most worrying thing about being involved in an audio commentary for a classic film of
US cinema is droning on and people inevitably getting a little sick of the sound of your voice, especially when that film is almost 3 hours long. You have to try to be as interesting, informative, enlightening, entertaining and as honest as you can: not only talk about the background of the film - from cast, to director, to screenwriter, and the path up to, through and beyond production - but you have to talk about your own relationship with the film throughout the years and the impact that it's had on your relationship with cinema as a whole.
Being asked to do that for 3 hours can initially be a very daunting task. Not only do you have to make it informative, enlightening, entertaining and honest, but you also have to not bore the listener. That can be a tough job if you're alone on the commentary track.
So, naturally that was a worry for me when I recorded a new commentary track for Eureka! Video's forthcoming blu-ray release of Sidney Lumet's 1962 adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's stage play Long Day's Journey into Night.
That's why it's such a relief when the reviews start to drop online and lovely words like this are being written...
"...the commentary spans almost 3 hours, so goes into incredible depth in analysing the film and providing further details about the play, production and other adaptations of the work. It’s a superb track and Harrison should be applauded for doing such a great job over such a long period of time. There’s not even any downtime, which is quite a feat."
